Where the Wilderness Meets the Canvas

Welcome to the digital studio of Sari Saarenneva.

About

My work is an exploration of the architecture of nature and the sensation of the performative. As a Finnish visual artist, I specialize in near abstract landscapes that bridge the gap between memory and material, translating the complexities of biological structures into tactile, three-dimensional experiences.

Working with acrylic colours and modern mediums on canvas or Plexiglass, I create ethereal scenes finished with peculiar, unconventional textures. My process is deeply informed by movement—specifically the rhythm of hiking and paddling through the wilderness. These excursions allow me to capture fleeting moments in time, translating my emotions and sensory perceptions into multilayered, ambiguous compositions that invite the viewer to project also their own reflections onto the surface.

The works are designed to be living entities that interact with their environment. They truly come to life in natural light, particularly during the transition of dusk, when the depth and vibrant layers of the medium are most strikingly highlighted.

With roots in Southern Finland and a background at the Tourula Visual Artists atelier community, I currently create from my home studio in Jyväskylä, Central Finland. My practice, supported by the Helsinki International Artists’ Association, explores the raw elegance of the North and the timeless beauty of organic forms.

These are more than paintings—they are living textures that shift with the natural light of the day, coming into their fullest depth as the sun begins to set.

Step Into the Process

My art is a constant evolution of emotion and perception, born from hikes through quiet forests and paddling trips across still waters. While the finished pieces live here on these pages, on my webshop and on Taiko, the winding path of my practice is captured in the moment on social media.
